I need to fatten you up. Eat everything here, and I’ll make it worth your while. ~C
BARCELONA’S CONCERTS WERE well received, and now we’ve moved on to Nice, France. Russell loaned us his villa, which is more like a sprawling estate. Sometimes I have to pinch myself.
Cole leaves the family room and joins me on the balcony overlooking the Mediterranean Sea. “Sure you don’t want to come with me to sound check?”
I shake my head. “You know I love watching you work, but I have a call scheduled with McKenna. We’re finalizing my logo, and I’m going to bounce some marketing ideas off her as well.” While I love watching him work, it’s now almost February, and I’m impatient to get my company started. I’m sick of waiting for things to happen—for Starr to surface again, for Greta to get her claws in me. It’s time to be proactive.
He crowds me on the oversized wicker chair, his arm snaking around my shoulders. “Are you positive I can’t convince you?”
The words whispered into my ear are punctuated by his lips brushing against my neck. The gentle breeze caresses my face. “You don’t play fair, Tarzan.”
His cheeks slide upward. “Is it working, Belle?”
I’m tempted to give in, but my phone rings in the nick of time. McKenna’s smiling face appears on the screen.
Cole grabs the phone and answers, “You have impeccable timing, McKenna.”
Her giggle comes through loud and clear. She says something I can’t hear. Cole throws his head back, laughs and hands me the phone.
“You win.” Wiping his eyes, he says, “You’re just lucky that you’re so freaking smart, Ro. You give me no choice but to humor your every whim.” He stands and stretches, his T-shirt lifting to show off his six-pack abs, and disappears into the house.
Sighing, I stand and walk over to the glass table on the opposite end of the balcony. Another gorgeous panoramic greets me. I open the latest email from McKenna with the final three versions of my logo attached.
“Where are you guys today?”
I open the first logo. “Outside of Nice, France. We’re staying at Russell Waldock’s villa—you know, Cole’s manager. You wouldn’t believe this place.” The fragrance of lavender mingles with salt, perfuming the air. “We went into Monte Carlo last night. The yachts were breathtaking.”
Cole blows me a kiss good-bye from the threshold of the balcony, then leaves for the sound check, Jared in tow. Roberto’s in the house somewhere.
McKenna tries to one-up me. “I went to Venice last night and I’m going to Paris tonight.”
Laughing, I reply, “Must be fun living in Vegas and having the whole world at your doorstep. Without jet lag.” I open the next version of the logo. Then the next.
We discuss the designs, select one and make some tweaks. Once we’re both happy, McKenna says, “Now, let’s hear your plans to market your company.”
The high I was on ratchets down a notch. Marketing has never been my forte, which is just one of the reasons I was content to stay on Greta’s payroll for so long.
